Designed by Edmund M. Wharf for Ephraim William Burr—who commissioned it as a wedding gift for his son Edmond and his wife to be, Anna Barnard, in 1875—the six-bedroom house was inhabited by the family and their two daughters until 1968. Set on one of the largest parcels in the city, the residence spans over a quarter of an acre (12,535 square feet to be exact) with lush gardens and a one-bedroom, one-bathroom cottage in addition to the main house. In addition to his daughter Theodosia, Burr was the father of at least three other children and he adopted two sons. Burr also acted as a parent to his two stepsons by his wife's first marriage and he became a mentor or guardian to several protégés who lived in his home. Burr traveled west to the American frontier, seeking new economic and political opportunities.

Legend has it that his spirit can still be seen wandering the halls and peering around corners on this floor!

During his last year as vice president, Burr engaged in the duel in which he fatally shot Alexander Hamilton, the former Secretary of the Treasury and his political rival, near where Hamilton's son Philip Hamilton had died in a duel three years prior. Although dueling was illegal, Burr was never tried and all charges against him were eventually dropped. Nevertheless, his killing of Hamilton ended Burr's political career. The top floor is home to a lovely family room with the original redwood-paneling and an abundance of storage for objects and books. This space can easily be used for entertaining or lounging around with a wet bar area equipped with a refrigerator and dishwasher. A fifth bedroom with en suite bath can host overnight guests.
He became a good friend, even confidant, of the English Utilitarian philosopher Jeremy Bentham, and on occasion lived at Bentham's home. He also spent time in Scotland, Denmark, Sweden, Germany and France. Ever hopeful, he solicited funding for renewing his plans for a conquest of Mexico but was rebuffed.

Many also have a fireplace, Jacuzzi Tub for 2, and/or a ceiling fan plus an exhaust fan in your ensuite bathroom. David O. Stewart, on the other hand, insists that while Burr was not explicitly guilty of treason, according to Marshall's definition, evidence exists that links him to treasonous crimes. For example, Bollman admitted to Jefferson during an interrogation that Burr planned to raise an army and invade Mexico. He said that Burr believed that he should be Mexico's monarch, as a republican government was not right for the Mexican people.[86] Many historians believe the extent of Burr's involvement may never be known.

The townhouse was built in 1830 by stonecutter Abraham Bogert, and the exterior of the building still features original iron railings and pineapple decorations denoting hospitality perched atop the wrought-iron newels flanking the brownstone stoop. Other notable homes on the street include a townhouse where Washington Irving supposedly penned his classic The Legend of Sleepy Hollow; another townhouse is the oldest known one in the West Village, built in 1799 and located just on the corner of the block. We are not the "room where it happened," but we are the place to which Aaron Burr fled after his famed duel with Alexander Hamilton. This area is steeped in history - Washington crossed the Delaware here! This town and county are filled with historical sites and gorgeous colonial architecture. After graduating from the chef training program at the acclaimed Ballymaloe Cooking School in Ireland in 2014, Lisa realized her dream would be to own a Bed and Breakfast in her own beautiful Bucks County.

His secretive activities led to his 1807 arrest in Alabama on charges of treason. He was brought to trial more than once for what became known as the Burr conspiracy, an alleged plot to create an independent country led by Burr, but was acquitted each time. For a short period of time Burr left the United States to live as an expatriate in Europe. He returned in 1812 and resumed practicing law in New York City. Still, history is history and we hope that you are part of the minority that will show support for our effort. That’s about it for us, thank you for coming to our website and we hope you join our cause. Although Burr is often remembered primarily for his duel with Hamilton, his establishment of guides and rules for the first impeachment trial set a high bar for behavior and procedures in the Senate chamber, many of which are followed today. Burr's secret correspondence with Anthony Merry and the Marquis of Casa Yrujo, the British and Spanish ministers at Washington, was eventually revealed.

All rooms located on the first and second floor have their own private bathrooms. Theodosia Burr Alston was born in 1783 and was named after her mother. She was the only child of Burr's marriage to Theodosia Bartow Prevost who survived to adulthood. A second daughter, Sally, lived to the age of three.[98] Two unnamed stillborns arrived later, with the first son in February 1787 and the second on July 9, 1788. Our New Hope bed and breakfast inn is an owner-innkeeper managed inn.

Standout details include the mansard roof above a bracketed cornice; colonette-framed curved bay windows with Corinthian capitals and reverse fluting; molded corner quoins; and carved balustrades. Defying his fellow Federalists, Hamilton waged a vigorous and ultimately successful campaign to derail the scheme to install Burr.
But under the original Constitution, the candidate with the most electoral votes became president, and the second-place finisher became vice president. Bizarrely, Jefferson and Burr each got 73 electoral votes, and because the vote was tied, the election was thrown to the House, which now had to choose the next president. Many Federalists, who detested and feared the idea of a Jefferson presidency, wanted to install Burr instead.
