Aerohive Networks

The result is a true next-generation platform for wireless cloud networking, that drastically reduces operational complexity and cost for our customers and partners. Full context-based visibility and control for applications and network services, enabling granular traffic management and optimization for network users. ExtremeCloud IQ reduces complexity & cost with a single interface for centralized automation & management. Offered as a public or private Cloud solution, ExtremeCloud IQ delivers a new approach to the deployment and support of modern access networks.

Whether through a purchase or demo gear, you have your hands on an Aerohive AP. If you have never dealt with Aerohive before from a wireless perspective, you might be asking yourself how to configure the AP. This post is meant to serve as a starting point to take that AP and put some configuration on it so that you can start connecting clients. ExtremeCloud IQ Local Cloud offers the same flexible cloud architecture, but in a simplified and highly cost-efficient infrastructure deployed on-premises. This solution is ideal for small and mid-size enterprises or partners who want the power of the Cloud in addition to complete control over their local deployment.

The ExtremeCloud IQ platform contains large amounts of valuable data about the devices, clients and applications on the network. While ExtremeCloud IQ uses this information to help you manage your network, there are many value-added use cases that can be enabled with your network data. Reduce operational costs and complexity with Extreme Networks' unified cloud management. Centrally deploy, manage, and support your Wi-Fi access points and switches with intuitive workflows, comprehensive dashboards, historical troubleshooting, and more. Powerful combination of radio intelligence features, high density optimization, and hardware innovation shapes the RF environment for the most optimal experience for all types of client devices and applications.

The last line sets the allowed data rates for 802.11g connections. There’s one base data rate that counts as the minimum, and all the other values are allowed too. Connections on lower data rates take up more airtime than higher data rates to tranfser the same amount of traffic. Allowing data rates too low can mess up your wireless performance for all connected clients. For 802.11n data rate settings are not relevant because the protocol works in a different way.

I can’t even find anything strange in the logs or show command output. I guess I will just have to live with the amber color. I started with three AP120’s when all the other models were still too expensive. The AP120’s lack a console port though, being managable only via IP. I don’t like the lack of a console port when you want to actually view what’s going on with the AP, or when troubleshooting. On top of that, the AP120’s made an annoying coil whine noise.

Additionally, depending on the code level on the AP, it may update to a newer version. Expect it to take a few minutes for the AP to come up, update itself with configuration, and reboot before achieving a normal steady state. You may see the connection status go green, turn red again, and then go back to green. AP630 is designed for high performance environments, combining the latest in Wi-Fi standards (IEEE 802.11ax technology) with Extreme Networks’ HiveOS software and ExtremeCloud IQ network management system. Aerohive’s management platform, HiveManager, can be deployed on-premise , running on an Aerohive management appliance or VM server. On-prem deployment is only available as a fully featured HiveManager and requires a perpetual license and annual support for each AP.

UNDERSTAND AND CONTROL APPLICATION USAGE ON YOUR NETWORK

If I remember right it's let's than $80 a year, but we'll worth it. I recently got a hold of a AeroHive 320 from a thrift store for dirt cheep thinking I could use it a a great home AP. Did some research on it and found that AeroHive AP's use some kind of Cloud controller to manage then, instead of a local controller like Cisco. The AP230 offers superior price-to-performance and full Wi-Fi functionality on legacy POE infrastructure allowing enterprises of all sizes to broadly deploy 802.11ac for their mobility needs. Should / can you use aerohive access points at home and...

Apps such as StudentManager and TeacherView can help school districts monitor and track wireless clients. A globally distributed, cloud-based infrastructure that is home to Aerohive developed Software-as-a-Service applications, including HiveManager Online. It also leverages their patent-pending Cloud Proxy feature that seamlessly integrate a set of partner cloud applications to create robust solutions for Aerohive customers. Aerohive’s HiveOS is the operating system that powers their access points and routers, while HiveManager is the network management system for configuration and monitoring. Together, with Aerohive access points and routers, these comprise a complete, controller-less Wi-Fi and remote network solution. This post is not meant to be an exhaustive reference, as there are MANY things that can be configured.

You’ll need a firmware image specific to your AP model. ExtremeCloud IQ includes guest managment to enable secure, tailored network access for visitors, employees and IoT devices. Intuitive workflows enable effective self-onboarding to virtually eliminate helpdesk calls. The College of Idaho used our Identity APIs to develop a new self-service feature that lets students generate secure network keys for their personal devices. The feature was simply added to the existing student portal, Yotenet. Streamlined device and network configuration with task-based policy workflows enable configuration of a mobility network from sign-up to deployment within 15 minutes.

There are a lot of other things you can configure in HiveManager, but those will be covered in follow-up posts. The goal here was to get some configuration loaded onto the AP so that you can connect some clients to it. The first thing you want to do when deploying second hand AP’s is start with a clean configuration. You hope that a company selling off older network equipment would have the common sense to clear the device configuration, but you might have to do it yourself.

Powered by Aerohive Cloud Networking and a self-optimizing architecture, highly distributed organizations can benefit from secure and reliable network access that's easier to provision, operate, and support. AP650 provides top-tier performance for high-density environments by combining 802.11ax technology with Aerohive's Software Definable Radio for dual 5GHz operation. It also features a 2.5 GE port for flexible backhaul connectivity and integrated BLE and USB for IoT requirements. ExtremeCloud IQ Private Cloud provides the same benefits as the public cloud solution, but is deployed in the customer’s datacenter.

Since there is a pending change, it defaults you to the “Audit” tab. If you scroll back up to the top after clicking on “SAVE”, you will see a box that says “UPDATE NOW”. You could click on that and the changes will get pushed to the AP, but we are not going to do that in order to see what it will look like from the main MONITOR tab page. Click on “Back to Device List” at the top left instead. Once you click on “REGISTER”, you will receive an e-mail within a few minutes.

If a device has connected to the SSID, the MAC address will attach to the Username the device used the first time it connected to the network. This new window that opens up gives you some options regarding pushing the configuration, updating the firmware on the device, or even scheduling when that updated configuration or firmware gets applied to the AP. You can plug in the AP right away, or plug it in after you have built out the initial configuration.

There are certain defaults the AP can and will use for DNS and NTP, but if the outbound firewall blocks the ports for DNS and NTP, there is a chance the AP will fail to connect. You should be able to just ship it to the desired location and plug it in. At Aerohive, we help IT radically simplify wireless and wired access with Cloud Networking. Our technology is sophisticated yet straightforward, offers unrivaled choice and flexibility, and continually solves real world problems with continuous innovations. Aerohive was the 1st to simplify Wireless Network topology and deployments by eliminating the WLAN controllers.

Hivemanager isn't free, so I would just connect it up, put on a basic configuration, then disconnect it. It should just keep running although you won't be able to change much.
